In time for the WindEurope international trade fair in Bilbao, Spain (20–22 March), ENERCON announces new features for the E-175 EP5: As of 2026, ENERCON’s top model will be available in a version with a new two-piece permanent magnet generator with a nominal power of 7.0 MW. Moreover, a tower with a hub height of 175 metres will be added to the tower portfolio of the E-175 EP5 – the greatest hub height in the ENERCON portfolio ever.
‘These product features render the E-175 EP5 highly attractive for our customers in the very competitive markets’, says Jörg Scholle, ENERCON CTO. ‘This year, ENERCON celebrates an anniversary: Over the past 40 years, we have been contributing to the energy transition and have been providing our customers with wind turbines of great yield and high quality. The new E-175 EP5 will help us to further advance onshore wind power expansion all over the world and to be an active part in shaping the next stage of the energy transition.’
The core of the higher-performing E-175 EP5 is a new permanent magnet generator with external rotor design. It has an increased diameter, can be disassembled into two pieces for efficient logistics and achieves – thanks to the greater nominal power – a significantly increased energy yield (AEP) as compared to the E-175 EP5 basic version with 6.0 MW. Rotor diameter and wind energy converter technology are largely identical.
The basic version of the E-175 EP5 is currently in the prototype phase. The prototype main components E-nacelle, rotor blade and rotor hub are currently undergoing final testing in the major components test area of ENERCON R&D. Subsequently, they are going to be transported to the installation site of the first prototype in Borchen-Etteln (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). Meanwhile, tower construction has been finished at this site.
At the same time, ENERCON’s production network is preparing the E-175 EP5 series production ramp-up. Since the main components of the new ENERCON top model are produced in plants within the EU (Aurich & Magdeburg/Germany, Viana do Castelo/Portugal, Opole/Poland), the E-175 EP5 is labelled ‘made in Europe’.
