Milestone reached: ENERCON signs first Wind+ Storage projects

Combination of ENERCON wind turbines with battery energy storage systems.

ENERCON, together with Planungsbüro Düser GmbH from Ense, has signed contracts for the first two Wind+ Storage projects in Germany. With these projects, ENERCON is reaching an important milestone in expanding its solution portfolio around onshore wind energy.

Wind+ Storage is designed for new and existing wind farms with ENERCON wind energy converters. The offering combines wind energy, battery energy storage systems and intelligent hybrid control, supporting customers in developing projects in a more flexible, economic and grid-oriented way. Against the backdrop of increasingly volatile electricity prices, including negative price periods caused by high renewable feed-in, storage solutions can help make better use of revenue potential and counter declining revenues from pure wind projects.

“ENERCON convinced us with the combination of wind energy, storage and intelligent control. What was particularly valuable for us was the partnership-based exchange: together, we were able to develop a solution that fits our technical requirements and our economic objectives,” says Dipl.-Ing. Andreas Düser, Managing Director of Planungsbüro Düser GmbH.

“The combination of wind energy converters, battery storage systems and intelligent control shows where the energy transition is heading. Customers today need solutions that make renewable energy more flexible to use, enable additional value creation and position projects for the long term. For us, this clearly confirms that our strategy as a solution provider is the right path,” says Udo Bauer, ENERCON CEO.

The two projects demonstrate different possible applications of battery storage systems in wind farm projects: In the Möhnesee-Westrich wind farm, renewable energy from the wind farm will be stored temporarily. There, a battery energy storage system with 5 MW / 10 MWh will be combined with two E-138 EP3 E3 wind energy converters and a total capacity of 8.52 MW. Soest-Meiningsen combines wind and solar generation at one site; the storage system is designed for grid- and market-oriented applications. A battery energy storage system with 15 MW / 30 MWh is planned there; it will be integrated with one E-138 EP3, in operation since 2026, and one E-160 EP5, planned for 2028, with a total capacity of 9.82 MW. In this way, storage systems can help make energy use more flexible, reduce curtailment, provide system services and optimize marketing.

ENERCON will assume key services in both projects as EPC partner. EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement and Construction – meaning technical planning, procurement and implementation. The scope of services includes engineering, procurement, project coordination, technical integration, installation and commissioning of the relevant systems. In addition, the profitability calculation, Energy Value Modeling for a co-located storage system and the Hybrid Controller are among the central building blocks of the integrated project solution.

“With Wind+ Storage, we are creating new opportunities for our customers to further develop wind farm projects in a grid- and market-oriented way. Taking this step together with Planungsbüro Düser GmbH is a strong sign of trust, openness to innovation and partnership-based collaboration for us. Hybrid projects in particular are technically, regulatorily and commercially demanding. That is why it is essential to bring together experience, system understanding and strong partners,” says Andreas Henig, ENERCON Executive Vice President BU Wind.
