Industry and government must advance climate and environmental protection together

ENERCON centre of excellence ramps up series production of E-175 EP5 E2 generators. Appeal for government support: we can only succeed on climate and environment together.

ENERCON is currently preparing the industrial ramp-up phase for its new top model, the E-175 EP5 E2, which is enjoying strong market demand. At the company’s generator centre of excellence at the Magdeburg-Rothensee site, the focus is currently on ramping up production of the relevant generators. ‘We aim to steadily increase the production volumes to ensure timely delivery to the wind farm construction sites’, said ENERCON COO Heiko Juritz during a visit from Prof Dr Armin Willingmann, Minister for Science, Energy, Climate Protection and Environment for Saxony-Anhalt.

During his tour of the primary plant for ENERCON generators, Heiko Juritz also called for further support from policymakers: ‘We can only succeed in protecting our climate and environment by working together. The wind energy sector and government need to pull together to make the energy transition a success.’ ENERCON is already doing its bit for this shared project, Juritz emphasised. Production of the new E2 generators began in Magdeburg last November. Since then, series production has been gradually increased and the centre of excellence expanded to accommodate it.

Saxony-Anhalt’s Minister of Energy, Prof. Dr. Armin Willingmann, stated: ‘As a manufacturer of wind turbines, ENERCON is not only a key player in the successful shaping of Germany’s energy transition, but – with around 1,000 employees – also an important employer in Saxony-Anhalt. In total, well over 26,000 jobs in our state can currently be attributed to the renewable energy sector. By further expanding renewables, we are therefore not only contributing to the independence and security of our energy supply as well as to climate protection; with this home‑grown energy, we are also strengthening Saxony‑Anhalt as a business location.’

The E-175 EP5 E2 is ENERCON’s new top model, and with a nominal power of 7.0 MW and a rotor diameter of 175 metres it is one of the highest-yielding onshore wind turbines in Europe. The E-175 EP5 E2 is also the central pillar of the company’s market strategy and forms the basis of the product portfolio with which ENERCON supports its customers. With connected solutions for the renewable energy ecosystem, the company provides answers to the complex demands of the energy system in the next phase of the energy transition.

To ensure that the positive developments continue and the trajectory for expansion of wind energy can be further realised in the future, the ENERCON COO maintains that reliability is crucial: ‘The industry needs planning security. This requires that the government create the necessary framework conditions and further develop the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) accordingly. We need cooperation of this kind for the energy transition to succeed.’

At the regional level, ENERCON and policymakers are already working together. Recently the generator centre of excellence became a member of the Environmental Alliance for Saxony-Anhalt. Some 200 companies, associations and the regional government have joined forces in this alliance, initiated by Saxony-Anhalt, to commit to protection of the environment. Minister Armin Willingmann presented the membership certificate during his visit to the site.

‘We are delighted to be accepted and to be able to work together in the Environmental Alliance’, said Dr Dirk Hofmann, Managing Director of the ENERCON generator centre of excellence. ‘The motivation for our membership is that we are committed to improving environmental protection at our Magdeburg site. For this reason we are striving for continued close communication and networking with other stakeholders in politics and business.’
