- AEP of the E-175 EP5 E2 increases by 5.5% - Field validation confirms higher yield potential - Higher energy yield enabled by new technologies and proven operating strategies - Additional energy yield within the existing power class supports grid integration and project planning
ENERCON is updating the performance assessment of its award-winning turbine platform. Following extensive field validation, additional operating experience and the continuous development of operating strategies, declared Annual Energy Production (AEP) increases by 5.5% compared with the initial baseline. The turbine becomes more efficient without any increase in rated power – an advantage especially for projects where grid connection, permitting and technical system design are aligned with a defined power class. The upgrade was presented today at a major customer event in Magdeburg. At WindEurope in Madrid, ENERCON had communicated an AEP increase of 2.8%; this is now complemented by an additional increase of a further 2.7%.
The update is based on the analysis of extensive operating data from the field. At market launch, ENERCON deliberately took a conservative approach and published performance figures based on robust assumptions. With increasing operating time and a broader data basis, the actual yield potential can now be assessed more precisely. Realised AEP increases may vary depending on site-specific conditions.
“What was initially evaluated conservatively has proven to be even more powerful in the field than originally anticipated,” says Udo Bauer, ENERCON CEO. “The latest results confirm the strong potential of the platform and enable us to reflect this potential in the declared performance data. Under real operating conditions, the E-175 EP5 E2 has exceeded already high expectations once again.”
Several factors contribute to the updated assessment: extended field validation, optimised and validated operating strategies, and new technological functions. One key contribution comes from IPC – Individual Pitch Control. This technology enables more precise, individual control of the rotor blades and supports optimised power output under real site and operating conditions.
“The additional AEP increase is the result of very precise development and validation work by our teams,” says Jörg Scholle, ENERCON CTO. “Our colleagues have done outstanding technical work, particularly in the further development of IPC, the adjustment of operating strategies and the analysis of real field data. It is precisely this attention to detail that makes it possible to exploit the performance potential of the E-175 EP5 E2 even more effectively and to reflect it reliably in the declared data.”
A prerequisite for achieving the new AEP level is an upgrade with the technologies and functions mentioned above. This upgrade is not part of the standard scope of supply and is offered as a paid option for new orders. The updated AEP values reflect findings from practical operation and underline ENERCON’s consistent commitment to quality. ENERCON had already pursued a comparable approach with the predecessor model: performance reserves were only officially declared after comprehensive validation.
For operators, the updated assessment provides a more precise basis for project planning and yield forecasts. At the same time, it confirms the strong performance of a turbine platform that is already well established in the market and now demonstrates its potential even more clearly. Because the additional energy yield is achieved without increasing rated power, projects can become more economically attractive without automatically creating additional requirements for grid connection, power class or system integration.
